COMPARING FRACTIONS

I. Lesson Title: Comparing Fractions
II. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Compare fractions having the same denominators.
2. Compare fractions with different denominators but the same numerators.
3. Compare fractions whose numerators and denominators are different.
III. Content:
This lesson aims to equipped the students with the knowledge on how to compare fractions. This will help them identify whether the fractions are equal, greater than, or less than the other through an interactice practice sets.

IV. Lesson Proper:

First, we are going to compare like fractions or fractions with the same denominators. If the denominators of two fractions are the same, the fraction with the largest numerator is the larger fraction.
For example 5/8 is larger than 3/8 because all of the pieces are the same and five pieces are more than three pieces.

Activity 1: For your exercise, click like fractions and try to answer the practice.

This time, let us try to compare fractions with different denominators or unlike fractions. If the numerators of two fractions are the same, the fraction with the smaller denominator is the larger fraction.

Activity 2: For your exercise again, click unlike fractions and try to work on the practice.

Now let us try if we compare unlike fractions whose numerators and denominators are different. For example, compare 1/2 and 3/4. Keep this in mind as you make your choice - the larger the numerator the larger the fraction and the larger the denominator the smaller the fraction. If the denominators are the same, the fraction with the larger numerator is larger and if the numerators are the same, the fraction with the larger denominator is smaller.
Activity 3: For your exercise, click different fractions and do the practice.
Analysis:
1. How did you compare fractions with the same denominators?
2. How did you compare fractions with the same numerators but different denominators?

Abstraction:
In comparing fractions, we should first look at the numerators and denominators. Different rules should be observed in each cases. As discussed above, the comparison may vary depending on the case.
Case 1: If the denominators of the fractions are the same, the fraction with the greater numerator is the larger number.
Case 2: If the numerators of the fractions are the same, the fraction with the smaller denominator is the larger fraction.
